Tropical Fruit, circa 1938
Watercolor and India ink on paper, 13 1/2 x 20 inches
Signed Joseph Stella lower right
Joseph Stella was fascinated with the form and color of the various fruits he transformed into pictorial icons through his vivid artistic imagination. When he visited Barbados in 1937, he was captivated by the vitality and brilliant hues he found in this exotic tropical environment, which had a lasting impact on his work.
In Tropical Fruit, Stella creates a chorus line of dancing fruit teetering against a wall, their corpulent bodies reflecting the exuberance of their bright coloration in the artist’s celebration of his subject’s succulence and sensation.
