Henri Harpignies, a leading French landscape painter, enjoyed a long, successful career exhibiting his works to critical acclaim at the Paris Salons throughout the latter half of the 19th-Century. His bright sunlit vistas of the 1870’s correspond with the similar light-filled subjects favored by the Impressionists, whose works may have influenced the older painter.
This quiet glimpse of rural life was painted near his boyhood home outside Valenciennes. Like most of the picturesque views he traveled about the French countryside to gather, this work is laden with the heavy strokes of deep, rich color that instill in his painted surfaces a magical, luminous physicality.
