According to Joseph Stella’s biographer, John Bauer, “It was in still life that Stella did his most consistently creative painting during the latter part of his life…” In this work, dating from about 1930, the artist has contrasted the rhythm of intensely colored vertical elements in a Mexican blanket with a flattened, curvaceous, and loosely described pitcher and fruit to produce a shimmering modernist image of graphic visual impact.
